Acupressure for Nausea – simple and practical tips to ease your symptoms

Dr Bryan Articles

Acupressure is an effective and simple way to relieve nausea. Nausea can be related to pregnancy, a digestive condition, or a side effect of pharmaceuticals such as chemotherapy, among others. Whatever the underlying reason for your nausea, below you will find some simple techniques for relief.
Acupressure requires firm, circular movements on specific acupuncture points. You will know when you have the right point as the sensation will become more intense, and may travel up or down the limb. Each point occurs on both sides of the body, in the same location. Stimulate for a few minutes while focussing on deep breathing, then swap to the other side.
PERICARDIUM 6. This is the primary point for all nausea. It descends the Qi (energy flow) pericardium 6of the Stomach back to its correct direction – down! Found one hand width-below the wrist crease on the inside of the forearm, towards the elbow.
Kid 6KIDNEY 6. This is another important point for calming a funky stomach. It can be found on the inside of your ankle, one thumb-width below the ankle bone.

KIDNEY 27: This point can be found just under the collar bone on the pec area, 2 thumb widths kidney 27 out to the sternum. You’ll know this one when you feel it.

If you or a loved one are suffering nausea or morning sickness, come on in for acupuncture. We’ll do all we can to look after you and get you feeling better.

Chiropractic Philosophy of Healing

Dr Bryan Articles

Chiropractic Philosophy of Healing
“Above Down Inside Out”

Health is poorly understood: body becomes sick, cure comes from outside and body “catches” something from out there that effects in here.  Take a cold for example, strep bacteria that we supposedly catch exist in also in a person without a cold and only take hold given the opportunity.  Health comes from inside-out, not outside-in.  Only when the body is weak pathogens take hold.

meaning from the brain down the spinal cord to the tissues of the body. Only when this pathway from brain to body is interfered with that the natural healing power declines.  In chiropractic we call this interference a “subluxation”. What is it?

In philosophy the explanation is as follows:  A SUBLUXATION is a bone out of place.  It disconnects brain from body and the nervous system suffers.  As a result the body functions abnormally and build itself sick. Chiropractic adjustment realigns the spine to reconnect the brain and body and allow healing to take place from “above down inside out”: from the brain down the spinal cord to tissue. This is normal and natural healing.

Subluxation 3 causes: physical, chemical and mental. To help your health: move well, eat well AND think well.  This is simple but infinitely powerful stuff guys! The power that made the body can heal it given the right conditions.

The chiropractor realigns the spine and the innate healing power of the body does the rest.  Given time and the right conditions, the body will heal itself.  This is no secret or magic; the body heals itself given the chance like when you cut your arm.  If there is any “subluxation” or interference to normal healing, be it poor nerve function in the arm, internal inflammation, poor blood supply, or whatever, the normal healing response will be weakened.
Chiropractic does not treat symptoms and therefore cannot “cure” anything – simply to make the body function how it is supposed to which allows healing to take place from above-down-inside-out.  If you suffer from any condition, please call or email us and we can discuss your specific concern and your body’s natural healing ability (details below).

HOT TIPS FOR HEALTHY DIGESTION: Chinese Medicine wisdom on best diet practices

Dr Bryan Articles

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) our digestive system is like a pot boiling above a fire. This fire needs to be kept warm for efficient digestion. Salads, dairy, certain fruits, and refrigerated food/drink are considered too cold as they slow down and damage the system.

  • By consuming foods that are difficult to digest, our systems are continuously weakened. This leads to symptoms such as bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhoea, weight gain, allergies etc.
  • Raw vegetables are high in cellulose and other fibrous structures that our digestive systems (unlike herbivores’) have difficulty breaking down.
  • If you already have a weakened thyroid it is especially important to avoid uncooked cruciferous vegetables (eg., kale, broccoli, cabbage etc) as these contain substances that may further inhibit your thyroid function. Cooking these vegetables deactivates these substances.
  • A lot of the nutrients in vegetables are stored in their tough fibres. Unless we break down these vegetable fibres, our bodies will not be able to access these nutrients.
  • Gently cooking your veg will help to make more nutrients available to you, easier to absorb, and eventually leave you with more energy, and a stronger digestive system.
  • Remember, in TCM different things are appropriate for different people at different times. Listen to your own body, try varied approaches, and see what works best for you.

If you would like to know more about digestive health, or would like to talk about your health concern, call us today on 02 9672 6892.

Back Pack Advice For School Children

Back Pack Advice For School Children

To help prevent the needless pain that backpack misuse could cause the students in your household, here are some tips:

  • Make sure your child’s backpack weighs no more than 10 percent of his or her body weight.
  • The backpack should never hang more than four inches below the waistline.
  • A backpack with individualized compartments helps in positioning the contents most effectively.
  • Make sure that pointy or bulky objects are packed away from the area that will rest on your child’s back.
  • Urge your child to wear both shoulder straps.
  • The shoulder straps should be adjustable so the backpack fits to your child’s body.
  • If the backpack is still too heavy, talk to your child’s teacher.

Acupuncture Found More Effective than Medication for Reducing High Blood Pressure

Dr Bryan Articles

A recent study has found that acupuncture is more effective than a common blood pressure medication at reducing blood pressure and controlling the associated symptoms.

Acupuncture found more effective than medication at reducing blood pressure

Acupuncture reduces blood pressure

60 patients with hypertension were randomly divided into two groups. Group 1 received acupuncture. Group 2 received the drug catopril, an antihypertensive and renal protective agent given the trade name Capoten. Common uses for catopril include the treatment of hypertension, congestive heart failure and protection of kidney function for diabetics. All acupuncture patients in group 1 received a standardized, protocolized acupuncture point prescription.

Both groups showed significant reductions in blood pressure. However, the acupuncture group showed greater improvement.

Measurements of diastolic blood pressure at 14 days and 21 days into the treatment regime revealed that the acupuncture group showed greater diastolic reductions. The same was true for improvement of symptoms associated with hypertension. The acupuncture group demonstrated clinical superior patient outcomes for reductions in dizziness, aching of the waist and knees, and palpitations.

Moreover, the acupuncture group demonstrated less adverse reactions than the drug group. This last result is not surprising since adverse events associated with catopril intake include light-headedness, fainting, dizziness, abnormal frequency of urination, bodily pain, fever, chills, abnormal bleeding (vagina, mouth, nose, rectum), difficulty concentrating and shortness of breath.

Based on the findings, the researchers concluded that acupuncture is safer and more effective than catopril for the treatment of hypertension.

Acupuncture is proving itself over and over again as a safe treatment option for  a wide range of health concerns.

Proven Relief for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Dr Bryan Articles

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a painful condition, most common among computer users. It is estimated that 195 000 Australians present to their GP every year with symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.

-Pain in the forearm and wrist, moving into the palm

-Tingling, burning, numbness of the palm and fingers

-Weakness of grasping

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is more common in women, and can be made worse by other factors such as pregnancy, arthritis, sudden weight gain etc.

The carpal tunnel is formed by the ligaments and bones of the wrist. Through this narrow passageway pass the tendons of the fingers and the median nerve. The median nerve supplies the palm and last 3 fingers. When this passageway narrows (due to inflammation, swelling, movement of bones etc), pressure is placed on the median nerve. This produces the above, painful symptoms. Symptoms can also be related to issues further up the arm, such as within the forearm flexors or neck.

CHIROPRACTIC ensures correct alignment of the bones of the wrist and is able to correct dysfunction within the neck and shoulder, thus taking pressure off the median nerve.

In a 1998 study, chiropractic care was found to be just as effective as conservative medical care using pain relieving medication and splinting. The chiropractic approach could be a better option for those wanting to avoid or unable to tolerate strong pharmaceuticals.

MASSAGE decreases tension in the forearm, shoulder, and neck, therefore relieving pressure on the nerve. Massage decreases swelling and inflammation, and trigger point activity, thus decreasing pain.

A 2004 study concluded that massage therapy improved grip strength and lowered pain and anxiety levels for carpal tunnel syndrome.

ACUPUNCTURE by promoting circulation within the carpal tunnel and removing blockages, pain is decreased and better function restored.

A 2010 study found acupuncture with warm needling and massage to have a cure rate of 81.7% compared to 47.4% with analgesics medications.

Relief For Females That Sit

Dr Bryan Articles

Chronic Pain, especially neck and shoulder pain are becoming debilitating conditions.  Many of the population suffer from musculoskeletal conditions, like those in Sydney, or the Hills area of Norwest, Castle Hill, Rouse Hill, Kellyville, Bella Vista and Baulkham Hills.  As technology advanced and we spend more and more time sitting these issues could be on the rise.  But there may be a solution…

Relief for Females That Sit

Gravitation Effects Cause > Chronic neck, shoulder and headache pain that can plague sedentary females.

– Long term Scientific Study by International Pain Journal shows relief with Acupuncture Treatment.

Read below for full article including journal link:

Gravity and Being Female

Females are special.  Unique, creative, loving. But truth be told, gravity has no favourites and places it’s ugly hand equally on both male and female.

The compressive force of our planets gravitational field squashes the upright human back down toward the Earth: Compressing bones, squeezing discs, fatiguing muscles.

Nasty I know, but sometimes this is good.  These compressive forces are needed to maintain adequate bone density and avoid the bone-thinning osteoporosis.

But it isn’t all rosy – when the female body is held in a key stress position, chronic pain can develop.

Key Stress Position

Your head is likely much more attractive than an old bowling ball with 3 holes jabbed in it, but alas, there is trait you share with this heavy ball.

Think for a moment of holding a bowling ball out in front of you with arms straight.  And keep holding it for longer than 30 seconds. What happens? Muscles fatigue, arm pain, etc. Why?…Gravity!

Now back to the common trait…
The weight of your head is equal to that of a 10 lb bowling ball (4.5 kgs).

When the skeleton is held in a compromised position (such as sitting with neck forward), the forces of gravity have an unfair advantage! Compressing, squeezing, fatiguing.

For women that sit for long period (especially using computers, tablets, or mobile phone), the neck and shoulder suffer these gravitation effects and can build up into chronic pains.

Science Backs 6000 Year Old Tradition:

Good news! The International Pain Journal, who conducted a long term scientific study (click here to read), stated that “adequate acupuncture treatment may reduce chronic pain in the neck and shoulders and related headache”.

And what is even better is that “the effect lasted for 3 years”.
Long. Term. Pain. Relief.

Now, anyone who knows a bit about world history knows that the Chinese have been practicing this healing tradition for over 6000 years.

While the human life comes and goes, Acupuncture has stood the ultimate test of time.

Acupuncture Provides Effective Relief for Anxiety

Dr Bryan Articles

Anxiety and depressive disorders are an all too common experience in today’s society. Statistics show that 1 in 5 Australians will experience some form of mental illness in a year, and the rates of prescriptive medications for these illnesses grows astronomically every year – with a 95.3% increase in the prescriptions of antidepressants from 2000 to 2011.

There is no doubt that stress, anxiety, depression, and associated symptoms can be a huge challenge for many of us.

Acupuncture has been found many times over to be an effective treatment for depressive and anxiety disorders. Recent studies have found acupuncture to be more effective in relieving anxiety and depression than tricyclic antidepressants. Even more impressive, acupuncture is able to do so without the associated side-effects.

So how does acupuncture help? In TCM the emotional state is intrinsically linked to a person’s physical and functional health. There is no separating them. The ‘Shen’ (mind or consciousness) is the most insubstantial of physical forms, and must be properly anchored and nourished by the physical body. Imagine our conscious state as smoke floating from an incense stick; if the stick is held still, the smoke will be steady and calm. If the incense stick is waved about or poorly held together, the smoke will become agitated and unpredictable. It is the same with our Mind. If the Shen becomes agitated, it will give rise to symptoms of anxiety and mental tension.

These symptoms need to be addressed on many levels. How is your diet? Do you have enough emotional and social support? What are your exercise habits? And then, in the context of all these factors, what internal functions are out of balance and need correcting? This is where acupuncture and herbal therapy steps in. No factor is less important than the others.

Acupuncture itself has a very calming effect. Personally, this was what got me hooked. I remember after one of my first acupuncture sessions as a teenager, I was walking the 20 minutes or so home. I arrived home and suddenly realized, “Hey I haven’t been thinking this whole time!’ I was blissfully in the moment and relaxed, without that constant mental chatter (mostly negative) that I was so used to. Many of my patients report the same benefits, along with better sleep, and a deeper sense of groundedness.
