Massage For Headaches:  Research Confirms Trigger Point Therapy Works To Alleviate Headache Pain

“Trigger point therapy” may hold a key to alleviating headache pain for those in and around Castle Hill, Norwest, Bella Vista, Baulkham Hills, Kellyville, and more.  Our Castle Hill Massage and Norwest Massage Therapists use trigger point therapy to pin-point the sites of headache pain and provide relief without drugs or surgery.

Trigger point therapy reduced cervicogenic headache pain (headache with primary cause from a dysfunctional neck). With this treatment, patients also experienced a reduction in neck pain symptoms, as well as improved range of motion and muscle function.

Trigger point therapy is a treatment used by our massage therapists here at Gentle Care Chiropractic Norwest to relieve trigger points (TrPs), or hyperirritable spots of pain located in taut bands of skeletal muscles.  In a new study, researchers tested the effects of trigger point therapy for the treatment of cervicogenic headache. Twenty patients were randomly assigned to receive either trigger point therapy (TrP therapy) or a sham treatment for three sessions during a one week period. The treatments were applied to active trigger points located in the neck.

Patients receiving TrP therapy experienced markedly better outcomes than the sham group. TrP therapy patients had significantly improved neck range of motion and increased functioning of the deep cervical flexor muscles. They also had substantially reduced pain sensitivity, neck pain, and headache. On average, patients’ headache pain scores dropped from a 7.6 out of 10 to a 2.2, or about a 71.1% reduction. Their neck pain scores also decreased from a 7.4 to a 3.0 after treatment, or about a 59.5% reduction.

More research is needed to understand why TrP manual therapy lead to these improvements. It has been hypothesized that trigger points play a role in the development of headache, since earlier studies have reported trigger points present in patients with tension headache, cluster headache, and migraine. However this is one of the first studies to confirm the presence of trigger points in people with cervicogenic headache, and to suggest that trigger point therapy can help.

Our massage therapists frequently use trigger point therapy in conjunction with acupuncture, chiropractic, diet advice, and exercise, for great results. This study adds further evidence of the efficacy of  massage therapy for cervicogenic headache.

Chiropractic For Arthritis: Help For Osteoarthritis

Chiropractic For Arthritis:

Norwest and Castle Hill Chiropractor Dr Bryan Hornby explains…”Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition of the spine and/or other joints that (in most cases) is a mechanically based problem”.  Chiropractic is a treatment that addresses these mechanical stresses to ease the pain of osteoarthritis.

“Abnormal joint movement (biomechanics) can lead to increased wear of the spine called degeneration and arthritis.  We use a mechanical treatment to help a mechanical problem”.  Drug therapy (such as paracetamol) can be used for arthritis, but it is a chemical remedy to a  mechanical problem.  It is like putting a square peg into a round hole.   “Drug therapy may be used to co-manage arthritis, as well as chiropractic” Dr Hornby states.

Here at Gentle Care Chiropractic Norwest mechanically based structural alignment treatments help this common mechanical problem of arthritis.  Dr Hornby is supported by fellow doctors here as American chiropractor Dr Peter Bufano states “….“…regular chiropractic alignments help to minimize joint in-flammation and reduce swelling, which helps to alleviate pain.  Chiropractic care is bringing hope back to our patients, showing them that they do not need to give up their active lifestyle…”.

Medical Journal Recommends Chiropractic For Back Pain

Medical Journal Recommends Chiropractic For Back Pain

THE JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION (JAMA) RECOMMENDS CHIROPRACTIC.

For back pain, chiropractic AND medicine was shown to be better than medical alone.  This combination is exciting news for chiropractors world-wide.  The source of the article is taken from http://www.tricountyrecord.com and is as follows:

“The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) has recommended to those patients who seek back pain treatment to consider chiropractic care before taking invasive measures such as electing for surgery. Surgery should only be considered if conservative therapies fail. According to the JAMA, conservative alternatives like Chiropractic care should be the first “line of defense” because they are safer and more efficient in relieving pain.

The JAMA’s recommendation comes on the heels of a recent study out of the medical journal Spine where sufferers of lower back pain all received standard medical care (SMC) and where half of the participants additionally received chiropractic care. The researchers found that in SMC plus chiropractic care patients, 73% reported that their pain was completely gone or much better after treatment compared to just 17% of the SMC group.

Back pain can be anything from dull or sharp pain in your back or tingling or numbness that runs down your leg. These symptoms may indicate a pinched nerve which occurs when the disc bulges out and puts extra pressure on the nerve that is exiting between the spinal bones. The Chiropractors at McCormick Chiropractic are neuro-musculoskeletal experts and are well suited to treat back pain and relieve nerve pressure. They are also experts in preventing these problems so you should not wait till you have pain to see a chiropractor.

Chiropractic care can show you how to properly maintain back health and prevent the possibility of future spinal problems. Surgery should always be a last resort because there is a higher chance of failure. If you have or have had back pain or any other spinal conditions, please follow the advice of the JAMA and see a chiropractor first!
Correction: An earlier version of this article erroneously attributed recommendations made by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) to the American Medical Association (AMA). This is not true. JAMA content is editorially independent from the AMA and the opinions expressed in the journal do not reflect the opinions of the AMA.”

Can Massage help Lower Back Pain?

Lower back pain can be a debilitating condition, negatively affecting all aspects of life. Up to 10% of us will experience chronic lower back pain in our lives. Thankfully, there are solutions available.

Remedial Massage Castle Hill – Our Therapy is a proven treatment to help alleviate the pain and discomfort that comes with chronic and acute lumbar issues. Research conducted at the Group Health Research Institute in Seattle concluded that “Massage therapy helped reduce pain and improve function more rapidly than usual medical care in chronic lower back pain.” The research showed that pain and anti-inflammatory medication use were significantly reduced when massage therapy was received once weekly for 1 hour. Flexibility, strength, and ability to perform daily activities were also significantly improved.

By releasing tight and dysfunctional muscles in the lower back area, as well as the gluteals, hamstrings, and hip flexors, the pressure applied to the spine and nerves causing pain can be eased. The causes of lower back pain are numerous, however there is usually a history of trauma, poor posture, or degeneration. Addressing trigger points within the muscles, stretching taught fascia and tissues, and correcting past trauma and injury damage with massage are all crucial aspects of treatment. Gentle Care Chiropractic Norwest, we also focus on correcting any dysfunctional postural, lifting, and exercise habits, to further improve the pain experienced in the lower back.

Scoliosis Treatment Without Surgery: Castle Hill- Norwest Chiropractor Attends Scoliosis Conference 27-28 July 2013

The clinic is closed this Saturday as Dr Bryan Hornby will be attending a conference on SCOLIOSIS.  Scoliosis is a condition that affects many Australians as is commonly called “curvature of the spine”.
We provide assessment and/or scoliosis treatment without surgery at Gentle Care Chiropractic Norwest.

The following information is courtesy of http://www.scoliosis-australia.org and due credit is given to them as the source of this article:

What is Scoliosis?

“Scoliosis was originally a Greek word meaning curved or bent. Today it is a word used to describe the most common type of spinal curvature. Scoliosis is simply a descriptive term, like headache, and not a precise diagnosis.

When a scoliosis develops the spine bends sideways and rotates along its vertical axis. These changes have cosmetic and physiological effects with long-term consequences which may result in significant health problems with severe curves.

Types of Scoliosis

There are many causes of scoliosis, like there are many causes of headache. It is the doctor’s task to determine which type of scoliosis the patient has.

Idiopathic Scoliosis

The word idiopathic also comes from the Greek language and means pathology unto itself. More simply, idiopathic means a condition not associated with any other disease or disorder. Unfortunately the term idiopathic is widely used in medical literature to indicate the cause of a given condition is unknown.

There are three main types of idiopathic scoliosis which are classified according to the age of onset.

INFANTILE  – A curvature that develops before a child is two years old. Nine out of ten of these curves will spontaneously resolve. This type of scoliosis is very rare in Australia.

JUVENILE IDIOPATHIC  – A curve that develops in the age range of two to ten years. This type is also rare in this country.

ADOLESCENT IDIOPATHIC SCOLIOSIS (AIS) – This type appears in early adolescence and is much more common in girls than boys. While the incidence of very small curves is similar in both sexes, the ratio of boys to girls for curves in the treatment category is 1 : 8-10. AIS in girls accounts for about 90 percent of curves seen in clinical practice.

Other types of scoliosis are:

CONGENITAL – In this type a curve develops because of congenitally abnormal vertebrae. This form of curvature is often associated with congenital abnormalities in other body systems such as the heart and kidney. Detailed investigation of these children is required.

NEUROMUSCULAR  – A wide variety of diseases and disorders of the central nervous system (brain), nerves and muscles can, but not invariably, result in the development of scoliosis. Muscular dystrophy is one such condition in which scoliosis can occur.

PARALYTIC – This is the term applied to the curvature which frequently develops when there is loss of spinal cord function early in life from disease or disorder, particularly injury (quadriplegia and paraplegia).

The management of the above-mentioned types of scoliosis is very much tailored to the individual patient and the underlying condition. There are many factors which enter into the decision-making process and the advice given to the patient.

Scoliosis Treatment Without Surgery

Chiropractic may be an option for you/your family as a scoliosis treatment without surgery.  Chiropractic is appropriate for some types of scoliosis and is considered a worthy conservative approach before a surgical option is explored.
We provided digital posture scan, hands on scoliosis examination (including the scoliometer), and referral for x-rays when required.  If you are concerned about scoliosis and/or posture, book in for an assessment on 02 9672 6892.

Sitting Bad For Your Health:  Sunday Paper July 14, 2013

WORK IS SITTING US OFF was the headline of yesterday’s article about the dangers of long sitting.  Spinal health is severely affected, as is long term health.  Long sitting promotes a change to the natural spinal curvature of the lower back (from curved lordosis to straigther spine) which promotes abnormal stress leading to back pain, disc bulge, and sciatica.  It also causes ligament weakness through a scientific phenomenon called “creep”.
Ergonomic desk setup was also a key focus, ensuring good alignment of computer screen, chair, mouse and desk height.
Download our free fact sheet on ergonomics here:  Free Ergonomic Fact Sheet For Office Workers

Tips given encourage ergonomic setup, standing, getting up regularly to do tasks, walking as much as possible in the office.

Our treatments promote a healthy spine – you don’t have to be in pain to benefit…PREVENTION is better than cure!  We help alignment and spinal health through chiropractic, acupuncture, and massage.

BMI and Back Pain

BMI and Back Pain

BMI and Back Pain:  Is there a connection?

RESEARCH CONFIRMS A NEW LINK BETWEEN WEIGHT AND BACK PAIN
May 2013: The University of Florida’s paper “Body Mass Index (BMI) and musculo-skeletal pain: is there a connection?” showed that those with higher BMI had a greater chance of back pain. They demonstrated that a high BMI (as found with obese individuals) causes inflammation that can harm the back.
Chiropractic can help with excess inflammation to relieve back pain. Here is why:

1. GOOD ALIGNMENT REDUCES INFLAMMATION—joints with bad alignment rub on adjacent bones creating inflammation.

2. GOOD ALIGNMENT REDUCES SWELLING—joints that are aligned in the cen-tre have less potential to create swelling.

3. GOOD ALIGNMENT HELPS THE NERVOUS SYSTEM—a healthy nervous system is vital for whole body health and wellness.

KEEP UP YOUR CHIROPRACTIC ALIGNMENTS TO HELP YOUR HEALTH AND:
– exercise to achieve healthy BMI
– avoid processed foods
– avoid sugar and soft drinks
– avoid alcohol, fatty foods, and other calorie dense items
– drink 2.1L fluid for women
– drink 2.6L fluid for men

Acupuncture and Sleep – Looking After Your “Baby-Yin” Time

Dr Bryan Articles

Norwest Acupuncture and Sleep

Acupuncture and Sleep – Looking After Your “Baby-Yin” Time:

Here is an informative article about acupuncture and sleep from our Norwest Acupuncture Therapist – Helena Nyssen…

“Friday, 28 June 2013

Looking after your Baby-Yin time (the importance of naps)

I love a good nap. Honestly, it’s the best part of my day. I feel that energy slump in the afternoon, and I know what time it is, it’s Nap Time!
In Traditional Chinese Medicine this is called ‘Baby Yin time’. After midday, as we head towards the night, the energy of the day becomes a bit slower, more relaxed, and more nourishing. This is coming into Yin time, where we do more restful activities, sleep, hang out a little more, consolidate our resources and spend our time wisely.
The energy of the morning is Yang; it is vibrant, bright, full of energy, we should be well rested from a good night’s sleep and a good breakfast, we do our most active work here.
So after your active, productive morning, it’s time for a good lunch at 1pm, something cooked and wholesome. Then it’s Baby Yin time baby. And you know what time that is, it’s sleep time. While lunch is digesting, this is when it’s important to ‘rest and digest’ let your digestive system work on those nutrients you have just taken in, ready to support you through the rest of the day.

Why is a nap important? an Acupuncture perspective

I Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is important to not ‘power through’ the afternoon. This wastes our Yin energies. These are our reserves and can be burnt up quickly if we do not value rest as much as productivity and action. Yin-Deficiency can present itself with symptoms such as general dryness (skin, excessive thirst), insomnia, tiredness/exhaustion, dizziness, and later hot flashes. Yin is further wasted by excessive consumption of Yang substances such as coffee and alcohol. Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine helps to bring Yin and Yang back into balance.

Cultivating the perfect nap

Ideally your afternoon nap would be max 15mins long. Any longer than that and you enter REM sleep and wake with what is called ‘sleep inertia’, meaning you will be groggy, cranky and seriously in need of a kick-starter like coffee, as well as interfering with your night-time sleep. I find 10-15 minutes perfect. It lets my mind relax for just long enough that I feel rested and ready for the afternoon. It’s also a good habit to sleep at the same time everyday, for the same length.

Science says
Research supports the idea that a little nappy nap is good for you:
–a 2002 Harvard study suggests that a daily nap reduces the risk of dying of heart disease by up to 30%!
–much research is available on power naps and productivity. A 10 minute sleep in the afternoon has been proven to increase alertness, attention to detail, and productivity back to the levels of the morning.
–a nap is better than coffee in terms of alertness. Caffeine makes you feel more wired, but more likely to make mistakes and produce faults of memory. A short sleep just keeps you fresh.
My last thought of the day…wouldn’t the world be a better place if every afternoon, as a planet, we all took our blankies, lay down on a nice soft bed, and took care of our Baby Yin 🙂
