Sacro Occipital Technique Sydney Norwest

At Gentle Care Chiropractic Norwest, we offer a unique gentle approach for back pain treatment, neck pain treatment, headaches, migraines, shoulder pain, leg pain, and more.  This chiropractic treatment style is called Sacro Occipital Technique (SOT).

From the Sacro Occipital Technique Australasia website…

“Sacro Occipital Technique (SOT) is a comprehensive, gentle and innovative technique of Chiropractic. It is so named because of the relationship between the Sacrum (base of the spine) and the Occiput (base of the skull).

One of the functions of the sacrum is to pump Cerebro-Spinal Fluid (CSF) from the base of the spine back up the spinal canal to the brain and throughout the nervous system. CSF acts as the circulatory system of the brain and spinal cord.

The pelvis forms the foundational support of the human skeleton. It supports the upper body right up to the skull, and enables us to transfer our weight to our legs. The spine holds our body upright, supports all of our organs and provides anchor points for our muscles. It also protects our nervous system. The nervous system controls our body, and can only function normally when our structures are balanced and our pelvis is stable.

SOT chiropractic care facilitates this balance for optimal health.”

Balance and Chiropractic - Rotary Health Award

Rotary Health Award – Balance Problems and Chiropractic

Last night, Feb 18th 2013, Dr Bryan Hornby was awarded with an Australian Rotary Health Award for his public talk on Balance Problems and Chiropractic, including falls Prevention and awareness at North Rocks, Sydney.  Little do people know, but 1 in 3 Australians over the age of 65 will fall each year.  Up to 24% of those will die within 1 year.  The cost of falls to our healthcare system is also over $100 million each and every year.

Tips to prevent falls and improve balance that were discussed included:
– avoid dim lit conditions and hazardous surface
– remove clutter from walkways both inside and out
– avoid cigarette smoking and alcohol

– do balance exercise, weight bearing exercise (for bone health) and general activity
– eat a balanced diet with full of calcium, B vitamins, and omega-3
– manage medical conditions (such as diabetes) with your GP
– see a podiatrist to get your feet checked
– see an optometrist to get your eyes checked
– see a chiropractor to help joint movement, muscle strength, and balance.  Balance problems and chiropractic work together as a major component of the balance system (the cerebellum) relies on proper joint movement to be at its best.  Poor joint movement may affect balance and stability.

Back Pain Number 1 Disability Worldwide

Dr Bryan Articles

New Research Findings:  Back Pain Number 1 Disability Worldwide

Global Burden of Disease 2010 highlights the pressing need to prevent and treat spinal and musculoskeletal disorders.

A series of studies emerging from the Global Burden of Disease 2010 Project, a massive collaboration between the World Health Organization, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (the coordinating center), the University of Queensland School of Population Health, Harvard School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the University of Tokyo, Imperial College London, clarifies the worldwide health burden of musculoskeletal conditions, particularly back and neck pain, in crystal-clear fashion, with low back pain identified as the number-one cause of disability worldwide and neck pain the number-four cause. Overall, musculoskeletal conditions represent the second leading cause of global disability.

Findings emphasize the shift in global health that has resulted from disability making an increasingly larger footprint on the burden of disease compared to a mere 20-30 years ago. In addition, while more people are living longer, the flip side is that they do so with an increasing risk of living with the burden of pain, disability and disease compared to generations past.

Sit-Ups Advice Feature Online – Wednesday Wisdom

Dr Bryan Articles

Sit-Ups Advice Featured on healthshare.com.au

Dr Bryan’s advice was recently chosen at the “Wisdom of the Week” for his recommendations on sit-ups and exercise.  Traditional sit-ups place an enormous amount of stress on the discs, joints, and surrounding tissues and should be avoided at all costs.  The traditional sit-up is one where you have your knees bent and curl up until your chest touches your knees.

Sit-ups, if performed, should only be executed by raising your torso a very small amount off the ground – just enough so your shoulder blades lift off the floor.  Any further increases the loading on the lower back and can subject it to weakness and/or injury.

For those wanting to work on abdominal strength, traditional sit-ups should be avoided and you should concentrate on endurance exercises such as:
– abdominal hollow
– dead bug
– bridge
– plank
– side bridge

Please see your chiropractor before commencing exercise.

Falls Prevention Talk A Success – Feb 2013

Dr Bryan Articles

Speaking @ Rotary WPH/Cherrybrook about Falls Prevention

Falls Prevention Talk – 4th Feb 2013

On Monday night, Dr Bryan spoke to approximately 30 people about falls prevention.  This serious issue is one that many people are unaware of yet, has a large impact on the Australian community.

Each year, health care costs associated with falls far outweighs that of motor vehicle injuries.  1 in 3 people over 65 will have a fall every year.  1 in 3 of those over 65 will suffer a hip fracture, and 24% will die within one year (Am J Pub Health, 1994).  The good news is that up to 80% are preventable.

Topics discussed include what causes them and how they happen, factors affecting balance, safe environment, the role that alignment and spinal health play, and the effect of medical conditions (such as diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, etc) play in maintaining stability.

There were some top tips given out as a fact sheet to all present and included advice such as:  avoid smoking and alcohol, avoiding baggy clothing, cluttered walkways, and undertaking exercise, a healthy diet.  Professional check-ups were recommended at the chiropractor, optometrist, podiatrist, and GP.
