Falls Prevention Talk – 4th Feb 2013
On Monday night, Dr Bryan spoke to approximately 30 people about falls prevention. This serious issue is one that many people are unaware of yet, has a large impact on the Australian community.
Each year, health care costs associated with falls far outweighs that of motor vehicle injuries. 1 in 3 people over 65 will have a fall every year. 1 in 3 of those over 65 will suffer a hip fracture, and 24% will die within one year (Am J Pub Health, 1994). The good news is that up to 80% are preventable.
Topics discussed include what causes them and how they happen, factors affecting balance, safe environment, the role that alignment and spinal health play, and the effect of medical conditions (such as diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, etc) play in maintaining stability.
There were some top tips given out as a fact sheet to all present and included advice such as: avoid smoking and alcohol, avoiding baggy clothing, cluttered walkways, and undertaking exercise, a healthy diet. Professional check-ups were recommended at the chiropractor, optometrist, podiatrist, and GP.
